Orthognathic Orthodontics Treatment (Orthognathic Surgery)
Orthognathic orthodontics or orthognathic surgery is a surgical method that corrects the shape, structure and relationship disorders in the lower and upper jaws. Orthognathic orthodontic treatment is also known as jaw surgery or jaw surgery among the people. In this treatment, the Orthodontist and the Maxillofacial Surgeon work together.
Dental Braces are not enough only when disorders of the alignment of the teeth are accompanied by disorders of the jaw. At the same time, patients who have problems with the occlusion of their teeth may want to correct their asymmetrical appearance. Some patients, on the other hand, have functional problems such as biting problems, although there is nothing noticeable in the appearance. In such cases, orthognathic surgery is applied to bring the jaws to the appropriate position. As a result of a successful surgery, patients regain a beautiful appearance, dental harmony, healthy chewing and speaking function.
Surgical orthodontics can be performed as a supportive method for orthodontic treatment to give more successful results in the long term in some jaw and tooth cases. It can also be used as a solution for jaw problems where orthodontic treatment is insufficient.
Orthognathic surgery, which is one of the most important applications among orthodontic treatments, is planned by specialist doctors after determining the patient's need for surgery. During the planning, analysis is carried out by taking measurements, taking photographs, panoramic and cephalometric shots.
There is a orthodontist in the operating room during the operation. During the orthodontic treatment, which generally lasts 6 - 18 months, the teeth are corrected with the help of brackets. At the end of this period, the patient is ready for jaw surgery. During the orthognathic surgery performed under general anesthesia, the maxillofacial surgeon and the plastic surgeon work together.
In mandible surgery, the part of the jawbone behind the teeth is divided into two and the piece of bone with the teeth is moved forward or backward. In maxillary surgery, the jaw is moved forward or backward or repositioned by moving it up or down. In some cases, bone replacement or reduction may be required.
The patient should rest for 2 weeks after orthognathic surgery, after this period she/he can return to his/her normal life. When the healing is completed, dental brace therapy is applied for another 6-12 months. Orthognathic orthodontic treatment takes about 2 years, it is an advantageous application with its jaw closing and functional features although it is more preferred in terms of desired aesthetic appearance.
Orthognathic surgery or chin surgery provides a proportional facial structure to people who are not satisfied with their appearance and quickly corrects faulty chin positions. Orthognathic surgery performed in cooperation with orthodontic treatment also ensures proper alignment of the teeth. Teeth, jaw and facial structure become harmonious.
Surgical orthodontics does not involve any risk as long as it is practiced by specialist physicians and in a meticulous operating room environment. However, the inexperience of the doctor or the wrong treatment will of course cause risky situations. Therefore, choosing your doctor well is important for the course of treatment.
The fear of every patient who has had chin surgery is whether there will be a scar or not. Since orthognathic orthodontics is an oral application, it does not leave any deformation or scars on your face. Only post-operative edema can be seen, but this situation also recover in a short time.
After the orthognathic surgery is performed, the jaws will be tied with elastic bands for 1 week in order to bone bonding. During this period, the patients are fed as liquid. The first control is done within 1 week after jaw surgery. After this stage, tire fitting continues, gradually decreasing. The patient should stay away from blows and extremely hard foods during the healing process.
