Otoplasty: What Is It, What Are the Applications and Procedures, Frequently Asked Questions

What is Otoplasty?

Ear aesthetics, also commonly known as otoplasty, are all procedures applied to correct this appearance of prominent ears that are angled forward or to correct ears with various deformities.

These procedures can be applied in children over the age of 6 years as well as in adults. By the age of 6, the development of ears is completed. Families who have problems with ear appearance can have this type of surgical intervention applied in the early stages of their lives without worrying that their children will have problems due to their development and growth processes.

The most important benefit of surgery at an early age is to protect children from psychological and environmental problems (such asjaping, loss of self-confidence) during the school period. In adults, in addition to aesthetic reasons, impaired ears may need to be corrected due to injury. If you are in good health, there is no upper age limit for this surgical intervention.

1.How is Otoplasty Performed?

Otoplasty is performed under the general anesthesia. It can also be performed under local anesthesia. During the surgery, the skin behind the auricle is removed. At the same time, the fold is created, the parts to be stitched are marked and the cartilage is filed. Sometimes the tissue behind the earlobe can also be removed using a special technique.

After otoplasty operation, it is possible for the patient to be discharged from the hospital on the same day, depending on patient's health condition. Some patients can be kept under observation under the direction of the doctor. Generally, there are bandages that are recommended to be worn in the first week, and the general controls of these bandages and the patient are very important for the first period. A period of 6 to 8 weeks is needed for full recovery, and it is recommended to use materials that will function as a headband instead of bandages that come off during this period.

The permanence rate of ear aesthetic surgery on the earlobe is quite high. Even if the earlobe, which is reduced by surgery, is damaged later, too much sagging does not occur. However skin structure and genetic structure are very important. In addition, using heavy earrings may cause a certain level of sagging of the ear again.
