Gastric Bypass: What is it, What are the Applications and Procedures, Frequently Asked Questions

One of the surgical methods in the treatment of obesity is gastric bypass. In this surgery, the part at the beginning of the stomach is separated from the rest, leaving about 30-50 cm. A part of the small intestines is also bypassed and connected to the newly formed small stomach.

In this way, patients reach the feeling of saturation quickly with much smaller portions. The volume of the stomach is reduced with this operation, while the absorption of nutritients decreases because the small intestine is shortened.

With Laparoscopic Gastric By-Pass (R-YGB) surgery, effective and permanent weight loss is achieved. Patients reach a full satiety feeling with much smaller portions due to the reduced new stomach pouches, similar to only volume-limiting surgeries.

The patient should be followed up for 4-6 days in the hospital. The diet until the first control is planned by the dietitian while discharge. During the first year, close follow-up is performed by an edocrinologisy, psychiatrist and dietitian apart from the bariatric surgeon.
